What month is it?

Yesterday morning, I was leaving KGS's house in Santa Fe at 7:30 in the morning, when things started falling out of the sky. It wasn't rain, it wasn't snow, it wasn't hail, although it looked kind of like it. Matt has confirmed my suspicion that it was graupel (sp?), some over 1/4 inch in diameter. I then got in my car and started on my 1 1/2 hour journey southeast to Estancia. While driving it started to snow, and while listening to the radio I discovered that not only was it snowing in Santa Fe, but also farther south in Albuquerque and Moriarty. Great. And I kid you not, I drove through a snow storm the whole way. Snow was still falling as I walked from my car into the Torrance County Courthouse.

I can't remember when the last time I drove through snow like that was. Sure I've done it driving home from work in the foothills, but then it only lasted a few minutes. Not 90. I drove through low-visibility, through snow sticking to the roads, to farmland covered in snow with plants or grass just peaking out. It really was like being back in Michigan again, driving through farms in endlessly falling snow. It was kind of cool. I can think that now because the snow eventually stopped and I did not get stuck in Estancia with my little Echo. However, I did drive through a bit of snow again on I40 between Moriarty and Albuquerque. In the second half of April. That was yesterday. Today it is supposed to be nearly 80 degrees. What in the world is wrong with this state?

Winter Wonderland

Ah, Santa Fe Peak. Isn't it beautiful without skiers all over it? Although I do appreciate the owners of Ski Santa Fe for letting people play on the slopes before ski season begins.

We took our brand new snowshoes (Thanks Mom and Dad!) out for a whirl partway up the mountain, and then we sledded down. The snowshoes made the snow walking super easy. (Except for me being out of shape.) And I'm pretty sure I've never sledded so fast in my life. We weren't on a black diamond or anything, but it was still pretty crazy. Crazier than when we used to snowmobile up the Michawye ski slopes and sled down and I would do somersaults and land back on my sled. Nope, this time even when I tried to bail, I was going so fast that I couldn't. Great fun.

And it was beautiful! The aspens were coated with snow all day, and the sun couldn't have been brighter. Although I couldn't feel my toes, it was a blast!

UNM Football

So this Saturday I was at the UNM Lobos football game. Strangely enough, they have a little paw for a symbol and their colors are red and black. Eerily similar to Arizona. I think they are copycats, actually. (Hah, I didn't even mean to do that.)

Anyway, I didn't actually see the game. Any of it. Although I hear they won something like 44-0. How could I be at the game and not see any of it, you might ask? (Other than being my usual self and people-watching instead of game-watching.) I was catering. And the buffet and bar were both strategically placed so we could not see the game. It was unfortunate. And boring. And I have bruises all over my arms and legs from carrying stuff up several flights of stairs. So I have decided I don't need to go to the gym because I cater. Not that I was going to the gym. But you know what I mean. At least it wasn't raining this time!

Also, I have discovered that I work for the most expensive catering company in Albuquerque, but I think it is several leagues away from the company KGS works for in Santa Fe. Like not even on the same playing field. And I guess that is the difference between the Burque and Fanta Se. Because I went to a rich person's house here Thursday night but there wasn't a pig in the kitchen. Or a French chef.

Labor Day

We headed back up to Santa Fe for some mountain playing with KG and PS today. (or maybe KS. ) We drove up to the bottom of the ski area and hiked up a picnic to one of the peaks (not the highest). Matt and I nearly died of altitude out-of-shapeness. Matt had a 6 pack in his backpack. It was gorgeous and delicious. The beer and the mountain. Although I was sipping Pinot. Thanks for providing us some fun guys!

Santa Fe

Instead of being busy little bees like we should have been Memorial Day, Matt and I kidnapped Arun and went up to Santa Fe to see Kristin and Patrick. Unfortunately Pat had to work part of the day, so we went hiking without him.

Afterwards we had some killer margaritas at Maria's and played in the pool and hot tub.

Santa Fe

Matt and I decided to spend this past weekend at perhaps the most-hyped city in New Mexico, Santa Fe. Yes, there was lovely adobe architecture, as demonstrated in this photo. Yes, there were lots of pretty things to look at. But the scenery wasn't any better than other places in New Mexico, and the pretty things get boring if you aren't rich and/or an art freak. Needless to say, Matt and I got bored. The Georgia O'Keefe Museum was great, and we did buy some prints there. I also bought a few small items for Christmas presents at some other stores. Luckily, we didn't leave our house until nearly noon on Saturday, and two World Series games took up much of the rest of the weekend, so we didn't have all that much time to kill. Now, we didn't get a chance to head farther north to Taos, which might be the better bet for people like us, and Santa Fe might make a nice stop on the road north, but that is about all I have to say for it. I doubt we will be going back. Bottom line: make sure you plan a trip to somewhere that actually fits your interests, not the best drawing tourist destination in your state.
